"The father of a missing six-year-old girl in Washington state was charged with molesting two young girls over a decade ago, it emerged today. 

James Aaron Wright has been co-operating with the investigation into the disappearance of his daughter Jenise, who was last seen by her family on Saturday going to bed in their mobile home in a rural section of Bremerton, near Seattle.

It was not until the little girl missed dinner Sunday night that her parents called police, authorities said.

Today it emerged James Wright, who goes by Jim, was arrested in 2000 on felony charges of child molestation in the first degree after an 8-year-old girl said he inappropriately touched them after a night of drinking.

More than a year later, in June 2001, the charges were amended to include third-degree child molestation after a 15-year-old girl who was babysitting the girl during New Year's Eve 2000 said that Wright touched her breasts and put his hands down her pants.

In court records filed in Whatcom County, Washington, the younger of his accusers said she had reported the incident to her mother who told her she would 'get a spanking' if she spoke of the incident again.

The felony charges against Wright were eventually dropped, and he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of assault relating to the older child, court records show.

'She's really independent, she's tenacious,' the little girl's father told KOMO-TV.

More than 100 officers and dozens of community volunteers were helping authorities search the woods around the Wright family's mobile park community in hopes of turning up clues about Jenise's whereabouts.
The girl was either barefoot or in flip-flops upon her disappearance, officials said.

Investigators were also interviewing all sex offenders in the vicinity as well as transients in the mobile park, sheriff’s spokesman Scott Wilson said.

Jenise was the youngest child in the Wright household, a blended family that included both parents and three other siblings under the age of 18, authorities said. Two other adult children also live in the home. It was unclear what her parents did for work.

The family’s home was searched twice and police were keeping a 24-hour blockade around the neighborhood’s perimeter, he said.

James Wright said earlier this week he and his wife were stunned by Jenise’s disappearance.
'My head’s just swimming, I don't know what to think,' Wright told local Fox affiliate Q13. 'She went to bed (Saturday night), she was asleep.

Wake up, (and think) she’s probably out running and playing,' he said.

The family has not made a public appearance to plead for help in finding their daughter, but friends and neighbors said they were extremely worried.

Mary Pelnar, 14, said she was friends with Jenise and the girl’s older sister, and described Jim and Denise as being 'like family'.

'I watched her mom sit on the couch and look out the window and not talk, and I've never seen her mom that upset'.

Shortly after Jenise's disappearance, Washington Child Protective Services took an 8-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl from the home.

Deputy Wilson would not disclose why the children were taken but s
aid authorities believed the move was 'prudent'.

Pelnar said she believed the move left the family torn apart in their darkest hour.

'I think they should have left them with the mom and dad because I've been in that house, and been there enough to know that the parents wouldn't do anything to their kids and it's a safe house,' she said.
Distraught members of the community said their community has always been safe for children, though some questioned why the young girl was allowed to roam for extended periods without checking in with adults.
Ruby Faaita, whose six-year-old daughter Mona is a classmate and friend of the missing girl, said she would not feel comfortable leaving her child with little supervision.

'I can't really say what their position was in it but I wouldn't let my daughter be out that way,' she said."

"BREMERTON, Wash., Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Police in Washington searching for a missing 6-year-old say that despite her father's prior charges of molestation, he is not a suspect and has been cooperating with the investigation.

On Sunday morning, 6-year-old Jenise Paulette Wright's parents discovered she was missing from her Bremerton, Wash. home, where she was put to bed the night before.

Jenise's parents at first did not think anything of the disappearance as they reportedly frequently let their daughter wander a nearby park alone.

"I wouldn't let my six year run around by herself and she has been doing it since she was 3-years-old," neighbor Phyliss Tindall confirmed to NBC News.

When Jenise failed to return home after 24 hours, her parents contacted authorities.

The unusual timeline initially put scrutiny on the child's parents, who faced lie-detector tests, home searches and the public discovery of father James' troubled past -- but investigators say the family has been extremely open and just wants their daughter found.

In the course of the investigation, authorities and local media discovered James Wright was previously charged with first-degree child molestation for an incident with an 8-year-old girl on New Year's Eve 2000, and third-degree child molestation for fondling the breasts and genitals of a 15-year-old girl that same night. Wright plead guilty to misdemeanor assault of the teenager, and the other charges were dropped.

Of Wright's past, Wilson said it "has nothing to do with this investigation," and police are focused on locating a missing girl taken from her family, not by them.

"Her parents have been very, very cooperative with us -- maybe not as much publicly as other parents," Scott Wilson of the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office told KOMO."

SEATTLE (AP) — Law enforcement officers searching for a 6-year-old Washington state girl who vanished last weekend say they're aware of a past molestation charge against her father but are focused right now on finding little Jenise Wright.

Court records show James Wright was charged more than a decade ago with molesting two girls, ages 8 and 15.

He pleaded guilty in Whatcom County Superior Court in December 2001 to a misdemeanor assault charge related to the older girl. It was not immediately clear why the molestation charges were dropped. Prosecutors there did not immediately return a call.

"That has nothing to do with this investigation right now," Kitsap County sheriff's Deputy Scott Wilson said at a news briefing Wednesday.


"Our main issue here is Jenise, getting her returned home to her family safely," Wilson added. Of her parents, he said: "I can't emphasize enough how cooperative they both have been with law enforcement authorities in the course of this investigation."


Investigators don't know if the girl wandered off or was the victim of an accident, abduction or homicide.


"We're hoping she's fine. And that's the expectation that we have," Wilson said Wednesday. But "we have to plan and execute our investigation as if it's a worst-case scenario."


Law enforcement officials are asking nearby property owners to help by actively search their own land.


The little girl was last seen when she went to bed Saturday night at her home near Bremerton. Bremerton is on the west side of Puget Sound, across from Seattle.


Her family didn't become worried and call for help until Sunday night because the child had left the home on previous occasions and wandered around the neighborhood, authorities have said. They felt it was relatively safe because the mobile home park is fenced.


The parents took FBI lie-detector tests Monday night, but the results have not been disclosed. Their home was also searched twice by different sets of authorities, Wilson said Wednesday.


A listed number for James Wright could not be found. The Bellingham defense attorney who represented him during the previous charges did not immediately return a call or email.


Dozens of officers from more than 15 law enforcement agencies including the FBI are involved in the search. Officers have been going door to door at the mobile home park. They were also pulling surveillance video from nearby businesses and checking in with sex offenders in the county.


According to court records, the girl's father was charged with first-degree child molestation in February 2000, accused of molesting an 8-year-old girl following a New Year's Eve celebration. The girl told a detective and case worker that he inappropriately touched her, according to court documents.


More than a year later, in June 2001, the charges were amended to include third-degree child molestation after a 15-year-old girl who was babysitting the girl during New Year's Eve 2000 said that Wright touched her breasts and put his hands down her pants, according to court documents.


A judge in Whatcom County Superior Court sentenced Wright to a year in jail but suspended the entire jail time provided he followed certain conditions, including paying fees."

"Seeking tips on missing girl, police say: Don’t judge parents" ~ FOLKS, Why was that CHILD in that HOME? Where did the system breakdown? Was it Whatcom County?

Don't JUDGE the Parents? I wish I could NOT. Yes it is none of our business as a society, as outsiders, and yes it is their family business.

Don't Judge often turns into look the other way while bad things happen to other people.

Does Don't JUDGE mean to shut up, remain silent, and let boys be boys and families do their own thing?

When child RAPE and molestation is involved, I say go ahead and NOT only JUDGE but do something about it. Change the Social Police, change laws, make a stand, protect the children and STOP condoning rape and molestation with plea bargains, improper investigations, flat out denial, and not believing VICTIMS because they are kids.

However, at what point do we step in, do we say, HEY it is ok to not only JUDGE but to stand up for children who are ignored, neglected, living with molesters and those children who are molested.

Which, I personally believe, that it will turn up at some point that James Wright was not only guilty in 1999 of child molestation but that has many more victims who will step forward. That is just my personal belief. Remember any and all attacks on me personally I will post at my discresion.

This is a massively important issue to me and I have been to a hearing in Port Townsend, WA and watched a Judge let a 17 year old be around 2 children he had previously sexually abused, and put these children in harms way. I have heard of the prosecutor saying that Jury's don't believe children. I have in my life seen men falsely accused of child molestation. I have known men in my family who have molested generations over decades and nothing seemed to be able to be done.

I have many family members and have interviewed countless people over 7 years who are victims of sexual attacks as children, and mostly by those they trusted, family and not strangers.

It is TIME to Make a POWERFUL Stand for the Rights of children who are victims of sexual assualt.

ENOUGH is ENOUGH ~ NO MORE.

"BREMERTON — As another day of searching failed to turn up any sign of 6-year-old Jenise Wright, authorities Wednesday urged the public to suspend passing judgment on the missing girl’s family and focus on her safe return.

“We would ask people to set aside issues about criminal history and parenting choices right now,” Kitsap County sheriff’s spokesman Scott Wilson said. “Let’s find Jenise first and sort the rest later.”

Wilson sought to tamp down growing criticism of Jenise’s parents, who allowed the little girl to wander freely in the family’s East Bremerton-area mobile-home park, and concern that her father’s criminal record may have some bearing on the girl’s disappearance.

Instead, investigators are seeking help from the public in distributing fliers and walking their property lines to seek possible clues to Jenise’s whereabouts. He urged area residents to lift tarps and look in boats, hot tubs and under bushes.

“We can’t be everywhere,” Wilson said at a news briefing.

Jenise was last seen at about 10 p.m. Saturday, when she went to bed in her home in the Steele Creek Mobile Home Park, a community of freshly painted and well-tended manufactured homes in unincorporated Kitsap County.

Her parents told sheriff’s deputies they noticed she was gone on Sunday morning, but were not initially alarmed because Jenise often left the house to wander the neighborhood and find playmates, Wilson said.

When she failed to appear by 8:30 p.m. Sunday, however, her parents began going door-to-door looking for her, according to Wilson. Police were called about an hour and a half later.

Wilson acknowledged that it sounded strange initially to learn Jenise was missing a full day before police were called. “You have to understand, it’s a different mentality, almost like a tribal community, here,” he said.

“She was, literally, a child of the park and everyone knew her. Because she was so friendly, she would have breakfast with some neighbors here and lunch with others over there.”

Wilson also said that investigators are fully aware of the girl’s father’s criminal history, but do not believe it is connected with the girl’s disappearance.

Jenise’s parents took lie-detector tests Monday, but investigators are not disclosing the results. The family’s home also was searched twice, Wilson said.

He said thus far no suspects had been identified, no people had been cleared and no possible outcomes had been eliminated.

“We cannot rule out anything yet,” Wilson said.

Frank Montoya Jr., special agent in charge of the FBI’s Seattle office, said investigators are following up on tips and hoping people will continue to call the FBI phone line at 1-800-CALL-FBI with any information they may have related to the girl’s disappearance.

He said the FBI was working to have billboards with Jenise’s picture and information put up in Washington and Oregon.

Susan Murphy, who works at a Burger King near the girl’s home, said Wednesday FBI agents had recently been in the restaurant.

“They had an unconfirmed tip that she was seen in here on Saturday night with another little girl,” Murphy said.

However, she said, the woman who was working the shift told the FBI she would have noticed any unattended little girls and she did not see Jenise that night.

Murphy said she lives nearby and has a daughter just a few years older than Jenise. 

On Monday night she talked to her daughter about Jenise and explained that her disappearance is why she won’t let her daughter ride her bike alone.

“People say don’t judge, but I am judging,” she said. “It’s unfathomable to me that you can go 24 hours without knowing where your child is. It’s pretty bizarre and crazy — and scary.”
